BlogSuccess: Fear of the Social Media

by Trish on July 27, 2009

I call it a form of resistance.

If you’re not sure you have what it takes to start a blog, keep up on Twitter, deal with the endless networking that you “think” is social media, than you don’t really know what it is all about.

It isn’t just “endless networking” or content creation (although those are two pieces of it); it is about learning to communicate with your audience.

Your audience is now online. There is no doubt about it. If you’re trying to sell something, build a platform, or interact with readers, why would you only use mediums that you understand? Especially when they are dying?

Newspapers, print magazines, physical book tours–all these were enough in the past. Not anymore. This isn’t adding to your responsibilities, it’s shaping them.

Why would you only approach this as they did yesterday? Why wouldn’t you want to move forward just as the world has moved in order to gain readers, to build trust with your fans, and to make good sales. You don’t want people buying from you just because they feel sorry for you that you don’t understand social media. You want them to buy from you confident that you know what it takes to get your product out there. That you know your audience.

Marketing may look to be even more confusing than it ever has been, but really, it’s quite simplified. Instead of having to go through traditional channels, folks can utilize the power of the nontraditional channel, and can reach more people than ever.

Who wouldn’t want that? Social media equals better results, better networking, better products. Now go for it.
