BlogSuccess: How Personal On a Blog?

How personal do you get on a blog?

This question comes up a lot! I think you can be personal and approachable, but not let a lot of your personal details out. As a business, you need to let your customers know who you are, where you are, and how they can find you, but they don’t want to know your pet peeves and your obsession with vintage Coke signs (unless it pertains to your business). You can let them know that you are qualified to sell them certain services or products, but not that you graduated last in your class (unless it’s a funny anecdote that your customers will appreciate).

See what I mean?

Personal blogs even need some distance between the subject and the readers. Not everyone cares what you had for lunch or that you and your spouse are in a pissing match over who gets up to let the dog out or that your mother still calls you Mikey.

Anyway, a business blog must only include the information that your clients care about. How do you find that out?

If you were on an airplane and you were scared of flying, what kind of information would you want the pilot to tell you about the plane, about himself/herself, and about the flight?

That’s the kind of information your clients are looking for. If you’re selling them something, what worries would they have about you and your company and how can you answer those worries in your blog posts. Anything else just doesn’t belong.
