If you’ve been collecting followers like many of the rest of us, can I challenge you to think about how you’re interacting with those followers? Perhaps the goal should be interaction more than pumping up your follower numbers?
Sure, you retort, easy for you to say, you with almost 5,000 followers.
Yeah, maybe I should take my own advice.
Well, I had to formulate my advice first, thanks. And now that I have, I’m sharing it and yes, I’m taking it to heart as well.
1. Do you reply to people who ask you questions or comment about you or your business ventures? I make it a point to. I try to reply to everyone who tweets or retweets anything with my user name in it. It helps that I’m a Twitter user that actually responds. I gather a lot of Twitter users don’t even respond at all.
2. Use Twitter to ask questions. I did this last week and met a whole bunch of cool people who gave me great advice!
3. Never be afraid of interaction, however pointless it seems. You never know what you’ll get from it.
4. I think blocking is for wimps. And I’ll say it again and again and again. That’s for you, Jake Tapper.
5. Be proactive about meeting your followers. Instead of simply collecting my 5,000 business cards (the old school version of Twitter), I intend to meet at least 50-100 of my Twitter contacts each month. Maybe more! Why not? These people are interested in finding out about me and having me find out about them. Who knows where it could lead? No, I’m not looking for a date!
Now get out there and meet people!

Great advice. Taking the online offline is key to any kind of effective relationship building with lasting power. Blocking people is for wimps? Not so sure on that one though…
