Twitter Tuesday: Ignore the Gurus

by Trish on April 14, 2009

I mean it: Ignore the gurus.

Last week, I read a sales and marketing guru give advice about Twitter. It just doesn’t seem right, does it?

He argued the point that automatic following on Twitter is pointless. His reasoning is that there can be too many people you follow and you can’t possibly keep up with that many people. This is a guru who has over 15,000 followers on Twitter and 5,000 friends on Facebook. I thought it was a bit egotistical of him to tell others they can’t possibly follow or friend that many people when he does. You know?

Gurus are that in name only. They know how to write well and can package an “idea” into a beautiful appealing sales angle. To me, Twitter is about using it for myself, not for anyone else to tell me what it should be used for. If I want 100,000 followers or even if I want to follow 100,000 people, why not just let me and shut up already?

Because he wants to sell me something. Well, let me be the one to say it. Shut up!

If you are on Twitter and you wonder if you should auto follow folks, just ask yourself, is this something that I want to do? If it is, do it. If it isn’t, don’t. People, the way Twitter will work the best is if we don’t all act like sheep when using it. We can figure out how to use it best doing what we think is right. Sure, there’s good advice out there, so follow it. But don’t just listen to gurus because they have an idea. Test it, figure out if you agree or not.

I absolutely respect each Twitter user’s right to use the service however they would like.

Now go have fun!
