real/brilliant: The Challenge of Communication

by Trish on April 9, 2009

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I think people are having trouble communicating these days. Perhaps it’s the stress, perhaps it’s fear for what our future holds, I don’t know. But as a manager, as a freelancer, why not take a quick look at your communication and make sure you can handle the challenge.

1. Remember to respond slowly, but quickly. What I mean is that responding rashly will not help the situation, but responding quickly the right way will. If someone disrespects you, don’t return the favor, but immediately either remove yourself from the situation or quickly inquire if there’s something you can do to rectify it.

2. Consider communication the tip of the iceberg. There’s always more to our communication than meets the eye, I promise. Before acting rashly, consider what might not have been said.

3. Ask questions. If you’re not sure, find out by asking questions. “Who, what, how, when, where” work for me. Just don’t be a pest asking too many questions. Be smart about it.

4. Listen well. If you’re sure, still just listen more. It can’t hurt. Listening helps more than you know. Sometimes what the people are saying doesn’t matter much, but they’ll feel better that you listen. Of course, don’t get sucked in to too much listening. A little goes a long way, I think.

5. Be nice. Above all, play nice out there. Communication takes two to tango, so learn those dance steps.
