real/brilliant: Writing Advice You Can Use Now

by Trish on January 15, 2009

I’m often asked for writing advice. Here’s what I say.

First, you must commit to doing it everyday. No exceptions, no excuses. This is so hard. Trust me. I battle this constantly. But you’ve got to do it daily. Or you won’t do anything. Second, you must realize that successful writers aren’t always the best ones or the most educated ones or the most knowledgeable about the publishing and writing industry. They just wrote everyday and refused to give up. Third, courage and gumption are huge factors in one writer getting published and another sitting on their manuscript for life. If you don’t get it out there, you’ll never find out if anyone wants to publish it. And fourth, the dream can propel you a long, long, long, long way. Just a dream. But what matters is doing it every day. So it’s a circle really. From the motivation to write, to actually writing, to just not giving up to getting it out there, to the dream and back to doing it everyday. That’s writing and it’s the best writing advice I’ve ever received.

What’s stopping you? Get to it. Write!
